This is our Official Christmas Card Picture for 2011.

Getting 6 kids plus a puppy and kitten to pose serenely was near impossible.

We thought we had it here but then we realized Ethan had wandered off.

We found Ethan, then the cat bolted. Probably because the puppy chewed her tail. Reagan is looking for her.

The cat is gone. The 12 year old is complaining through gritted teeth that this is taking too long...

I tried to get some shots of just the younger kids after the dog took off. Since they were so cute and matchy.

But some of us had too much energy.

This would have been nice if the baby doesn't look terrified. "Save me from Christmas card torment!" he is thinking.

After that I gave up entirely.

Reagan just finished a unit on A Wrinkle in Time and Space. One of his projects was to make a solar oven to cook marshmellows for s'mores. It didn't work! Here is Reagan's lab group in Science class, they made model settlements for Jupiter's moons.

Color mixing with snow

I got a great idea from Theresa at LaPaz Farm- color mixing with snow!

It was interesting to see how the different ages reacted to this activity differently: the 6-year-old was able to figure out all the combinations of primary colors and worked very methodically to create the secondary colors. The 4-year-old enjoyed mixing the colors to get new ones, but was surprised each time he mixed red and blue and got purple. It took him three times of getting to purple to decide that EVERY time he mixed red and blue he would get...purple. The 1-year-old colored some snow blue and said, "boo" and was quite pleased with himself!

We did variations of this all week, snow is really fun to play with inside! A bowl of snow and kitchen utensils provided a lot of entertainment.

Ethan LOVES to empty the dishwasher. He is actually pretty good at it for a 1-year-old. Loading the dishwasher is another story. He puts the clean dishes from the cabinet into the dishwasher if there aren't enough dirty ones to fill it.

Friday marked the end of first semester. I am really pleased with where we are at. Reagan and Mary have both improved in their handwriting to the point where I am ready to introduce writing (as in composition) curricula for them. Reagan has started IEW American History Theme-based Writing Lessons, and Mary is starting Writing With Ease.
Here is an overview of each kid's day, we use workboxes so these are their boxes:

Mary grade 1
1. Reading- I See Sam level 4 readers. She is almost done with these and now says they are too easy! She read one so fast I didn't believe she read it, but she was able to retell the story. She is ready to start reading real books!
2. A Reason for Handwriting. She likes that she gets to copy the Bible verses onto pretty paper, but doesn't enjoy lining her letters up properly. Gotta keep working on that!
3. Barton Reading and Spelling. We just finished book 3, on to book 4! This is her least favorite subject because it is hard. Her reading is taking off, but spelling needs to be worked on.
4. Grammar/Writing - First Language Lessons and Writing with Ease. She is learning parts of speech, memorizing poems, learning months and days of the week, narrating and doing copywork. These lessons are quick but effective!
5. RightStart Math B. This book is a great fit for her. She is good at math, but not exceptional and is learning a lot from using the abacus and all the fun games in this program.
6. Moving Beyond the Page 6-8. This unit is on maps and world cultures. There are 3-4 activities each day. She likes this part of the day best as their are many crafts, games, stories and projects.
7. History/Geography/Science/Bible/Critical Thinking. These subjects are done once a week. She enjoys them all. We are using Story of the World volume 1 which covers ancient times. Science is a weekly lesson from Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding which includes a book and sometimes an activity. We are reading through the Golden Childrens Bible while she colors the pages from the Great Adventure Kids bible study. Building Thinking Skills Primary sheets are a fun extra, she does things like make patterns with attribute blocks.

Reagan grade 6
1. MCT Practice Town. We finished Grammar Town and Paragraph Town. This book has a daily sentence to analyze- label parts of speech, phrases, and clauses. It is quick, but good practice.
2. IEW American History Writing Lessons. This is going well, we do 1-2 lessons a week. He writes the paper for homework. There is some grammar and vocabulary included. He does not like to write, but is taking to using the computer and the spell check. The American History theme is making it more palatable.
3. Latin Road to English Grammar. This covers latin, grammar, and word study. I like that it encourages notetaking skills too, he has to keep a notebook as we work through the text.
4-5. Moving Beyond the Page 9-11 Language Arts. These units have daily reading assignments and related worksheets. This quarter he will read The Witch of Blackbird Pond, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, and The Ballad of Lucy Whipple.
6-7. Moving Beyond the Page 9-11 Science/Social Studies. These units are related to the themes of the books he is reading. Topics this quarter are American revolution, inventions, and westward expansion.
8. Read-Aloud. I am reading him St. Isaac and the Indians, a saint biography. I wanted to throw in something fun and this was my idea of fun.
9. Bible. We are reading the Gospel of Mark and discussing it using the questions in Designing Your Own Classical Curriculum.
10. Math Review. Singapore Extra Practice 5. I have him doing a page a day of the previous math level as review.
11. Math. We are just finishing Singapore 5b. Moving on to 6a and hoping to start the Challenging Word Problems book as well.
12. Spelling. We just started MegaWords workbooks for spelling, these seem to be a good fit.
Reagan also does Music Ace and Building Thinking Skills software if he has an empty box, we try to fit these in once a week.

I moved the younger kids' school stuff upstairs, into what used to be a toy room. The kids didn't play up there, they just ended up dumping toys everywhere. Now there are a few toys, which get played with more because they aren't a mess. The other half makes a very nice school room.

Quarter 2: Weeks 1-3

Mary finished a unit on animals, plants and biomes. Here she made a food chain: She made this diorama of a forest biome (the whales in the back corner are just visiting!), I'm glad I got a picture because hours later the box became part of a massive fort and the animals were scattered!

Jameson and Mary have been learning about the solar system, they each made a model of the planets.

Here they are making the universe in a jar. A fun activity!

Ethan had fun scooping the sequins into a jar.

Mary learned about ancient Africa in her Story of the World lesson this week. She and Jameson made Anansi the spider.

We took a trip to the Children's Museum with some friends from our homeschool group. Ethan's favorite thing their is this truck he can sit in.

Reagan is reading The Cay and studying ocean science. He enjoyed creating an imaginary sea creature out of clay.

First Quarter Report

We finished our first quarter of the school year! Here is a review of what we covered...

Reagan grade 6:
Reagan finished up R.E.A.L Science Chemistry. Hecompleted his element book. He did the following units of the Moving Beyond the Page curriculum which coveres language arts, science and social studies:
Poetry/50 States Geography
The View from Saturday/Energy
Tall Tales/Wisconsin
He made a book about Wisconsin:

For math we did a review of 1st-6th grade math using The Math Tutor DVD's. Now he is starting Singapore Math and we plan to continue that for the rest of the school year.

For language arts he is using the following:
Spelling- Barton Reading and Spelling(levels 3-5 completed).
Grammar and Mechanics - MCT Grammar Town and Practice Town and Daily Grams 6.
Composition - MCT Paragraph Town, and writing assignments from Moving Beyond the Page units.
Vocabulary- MCT Caeser's English 1
Handwriting- Handwriting Without Tears Cursive and other handwriting practice books.
Typing - Spongebob typing.

Mary grade 1:

Mary completed the Community unit from Moving Beyond the Page. This unit covered social studies topics of community and citizenship and science topics of plants and animals and their biomes. She is also doing Story of the World Volume 1 for history and Building the Foundations of Scientific Understanding for science.

She is doing RightStart math level B and only got 1 wrong on the 9 weeks test.

For language arts she is doing the following:
Phonics- Barton Reading and Spelling level 3 and Explode the Code workbooks.
Reading - I See Sam Readers level 2.
Grammar - First Language Lessons
Handwriting - Handwriting Without Tears, A Reason for Handwriting.

Her reading and handwriting have really improved! She is finally writing in lowercase letters! Here is a page from the beginning of the year followed by one from last week:

Mary is also doing Building Thinking Skills Primary and The Great Adventure Kids Bible Study.

Both kids are also keeping nature journals. We covered the following topics: spiders, leaves, geese, and plants.

Our artist of the quarter was Kandinsky and our composer was Vivaldi.

We are using Family Formation for religion and enjoying it, all the kids learn the same thing which makes it easy to teach!

First Lego League

Last Saturday Reagan participated in a First Lego League tournament with his team, the Flaming Bunnies. The team had to complete a research project where they researched the season's theme of biomedical engineering, identified a real world problem and brainstormed an innovative solution. They presented their project to our homeschool group and also to the judges at the tournament. Their solution was to improve smokeless cigarettes to help people quit smoking.

The other part of the competition involved building a robot from Legos and programming it to complete missions. They were judged on robot design, team work, and robot performance. They excelled at the teamwork interview! They were given five minutes to build a famous landmark out of Legos and they worked together with amazing cooperation!

Here they are marching in for the opening ceremony.
